Designed in collaboration with master bladesmith Kiku Matsuda, the SOG Kiku XR LTE Folding Knife is a refined, lightweight take on the acclaimed Kiku XR platform, engineered for serious everyday carry. The "LTE" designation is no marketing spin — carbon fibre liners and spacers trim the weight down by nearly 25% compared to the standard Kiku XR, landing this knife at just 116g without sacrificing any structural integrity. The tanto-style blade is ground from CRYO CTS-XHP stainless steel, heat treated to a hardness of 61-63 HRC, which puts it well above the performance threshold you'd expect from a production folder at this level. Whether you're running it on a day hike, out in the field, or reaching for it on the workbench, this is a knife built to perform and built to last.

SOG Kiku XR LTE Folding Knife Key Features

  • Blade Steel — CRYO CTS-XHP: CTS-XHP is a high-chromium, high-carbon stainless steel, cryogenically treated to push hardness to 61-63 HRC. This translates to exceptional edge retention and strong corrosion resistance, meaning the blade holds a working edge longer and handles exposure to moisture, salt, and the elements better than most production steels.
  • Blade Style — Tanto with Compound Grind: The 77mm blade runs a compound grind profile — a hollow saber grind along the rear section for clean slicing, transitioning to a saber-ground harpoon tip that reinforces the point for piercing tasks. It's a geometry that balances cutting performance with tip strength rather than sacrificing one for the other.
  • Blade Finish — Graphite TiNi Coating: The titanium nitride coating delivers a low-reflectivity graphite finish that reduces glare, adds a layer of corrosion protection, and gives the blade a clean, purposeful look in the field.
  • Handle Construction — G10 with Carbon Fibre Liners: The handle scales are G10, a fibreglass-based laminate known for its durability and grip in adverse conditions. Carbon fibre liners replace the standard steel liners, significantly reducing weight while maintaining rigidity. Sculpted contouring and aggressive gimping give a secure grip whether you're wearing gloves or working with wet hands.
  • Lock Mechanism — XR Lock (Ambidextrous): SOG's XR Lock is a frame-lock derivative engineered for smooth, secure engagement and easy one-handed release. It's fully ambidextrous, making it accessible for left- and right-handed users alike without any awkward repositioning.
  • Opening — Flipper and Thumb Hole: Dual opening options give you flexibility depending on grip and glove situation. The flipper tab allows a quick, confident deployment, while the thumb hole provides a traditional alternative for slower, more controlled opening.
  • Dimensions and Carry: Overall open length is 186mm, with a closed length of 109mm and blade thickness of 3.8mm. The reversible, tip-up low-carry pocket clip keeps the knife seated securely and positions it consistently for a clean draw.
  • Weight — 116g: At 116g, the Kiku XR LTE sits in a comfortable carry weight range for an all-day folder without feeling insubstantial in hand. The weight saving over the standard Kiku XR is a direct result of the carbon fibre liner and spacer construction.
  • Country of Origin — Taiwan: Manufactured in Taiwan to SOG's production specifications.

The Kiku XR LTE is one of those folders that earns its keep across genuinely varied use — equally at home clipped to a field vest or in daily rotation as a working knife. The combination of Kiku Matsuda's design language, CTS-XHP steel, and the XR Lock system makes this a compelling option for anyone who wants a high-performance folder without carrying unnecessary weight.

What steel is the Kiku XR LTE blade made from, and how does it perform?

The blade is made from CRYO CTS-XHP steel, hardened to 61–63 HRC. This steel offers excellent edge retention and a high degree of corrosion resistance, making it a strong choice for everyday carry and tactical use where reliable, long-lasting sharpness matters. The 3.8mm thick blade is finished with a graphite TiNi coating.

How does the LTE differ from the standard Kiku XR?

The Kiku XR LTE is nearly 25% lighter than the standard Kiku XR, achieved through the use of carbon fiber liners and spacers. Despite the weight reduction, it retains the same G10 handle, XR lock system, and tanto blade design, making it a more carry-friendly option without compromising on construction quality.

What does the compound grind on the tanto blade actually mean in practice?

The compound grind combines a hollow saber grind along the rear of the blade for slicing performance with a saber-ground harpoon tip for added strength during piercing tasks. This makes the 77mm tanto blade versatile across both cutting and tactical applications rather than optimising purely for one use.

How does the pocket clip work, and is the knife suitable for left-handed carry?

The reversible low-carry, tip-up pocket clip can be configured for either left or right-hand carry. The XR lock itself is also ambidextrous and easy to actuate, so left-handed users can carry and operate the Kiku XR LTE comfortably. The closed length of 109mm keeps it compact in the pocket.
