Hand spears and Pole spears occupy a distinct niche in underwater hunting, complementing but never replacing the traditional speargun. They serve as ideal entry points for newcomers due to their effectiveness around rocky environments and ease of use for shore diving.

A notable advantage of hand spears is the user's control over the rubber load. To load a hand spear, you manually pull the rubber to your desired tension and secure it by gripping the spear, allowing for variable power adjustment. In contrast, spearguns have fixed anchor points defined by welded tabs, making it challenging to reduce power effectively. This flexibility is crucial when hunting near rocks, as overshooting with full power can lead to losing the spear shaft.
