Born from a collaboration between SOG and renowned Japanese bladesmith Kiku Matsuda, the SOG Kiku XR Folding Knife is a precision-engineered folder that bridges traditional Japanese blade philosophy with modern materials and locking technology. The tanto blade is ground from CTS XHP stainless steel, a high-chromium, high-carbon alloy that sits in the same performance tier as tool steels, offering exceptional edge retention and corrosion resistance that most stainless blades simply can't match. To push that performance further, the steel undergoes cryogenic treatment post-hardening, refining the grain structure for sharper, longer-lasting edges at a hardness of 61-63 HRC. Whether you're out in the field on a hunt, working through camp tasks, or carrying a capable everyday folder, the Kiku XR is built to handle serious use without hesitation.

SOG Kiku XR Folding Knife Key Features

  • Blade Steel - CTS XHP Stainless Steel: A high-performance stainless alloy with a composition close to D2 tool steel, offering outstanding edge retention, toughness and corrosion resistance. Cryogenic treatment further enhances sharpness retention. Hardness is rated at 61-63 HRC, well above the standard for folding knives in this class.
  • Blade Shape - Tanto with Compound Grind: The 76.96 mm (3.03") tanto profile delivers a strong, reinforced tip and excellent point strength, while the compound grind balances cutting geometry with blade durability across a range of tasks.
  • Blade Finish - Black Cerakote: A ceramic-based finish applied to the 3.81 mm (0.15") thick blade for added corrosion resistance and a low-reflectivity appearance that holds up well in the field.
  • Locking Mechanism - XR Lock: SOG's proprietary XR Lock is engineered to withstand up to 1,500 pounds (680 kg) of force, making it one of the strongest folder lock systems available. It provides a secure, rattle-free lock-up with a clean release.
  • Opening Mechanism - Ambidextrous Thumb Hole and Flipper: Both a thumb hole and a flipper tab allow for smooth, rapid one-handed deployment from either hand, making the Kiku XR genuinely ambidextrous in real-world use.
  • Handle Material - Black Linen Micarta with Stainless Steel Liners: Linen Micarta is a composite of woven fabric and resin that becomes more grippy when wet, making it a dependable handle material in variable conditions. Stainless steel liners add structural rigidity and durability to the handle.
  • Pocket Clip - Reversible Deep Carry, Tip-Up: The low-profile, reversible clip sits the knife deep in the pocket for a discreet carry profile and can be configured for left or right-hand carry.
  • Dimensions and Weight: Closed length 109.22 mm (4.30"), overall length 185.42 mm (7.30"), weight 158.8 g (5.6 oz). A solid, substantive folder that carries well without being excessive.
  • Lanyard Hole: Integrated into the handle for attaching a lanyard or retention cord when working in demanding environments.
  • Country of Origin - Taiwan: Manufactured in Taiwan under SOG's quality specifications.

The Kiku XR is a folder that earns its place in serious kit. With a blade steel and lock system well above the average for production folders, and a Micarta handle that performs where others slip, it's a knife designed without compromise for those who actually rely on what they carry.

What blade steel is used in the SOG Kiku XR, and why does it matter?

The Kiku XR uses CTS XHP stainless steel, heat-treated to 61–63 HRC and cryogenically processed for enhanced sharpness retention. This steel balances excellent edge retention, toughness, and corrosion resistance, making it well-suited to demanding everyday carry use. The black Cerakote finish adds an extra layer of protection against wear and the elements.

How does the XR Lock work, and how secure is it?

The XR Lock is SOG's proprietary locking mechanism, rated to withstand up to 1,500 pounds of force. It engages reliably when the blade is fully open and releases cleanly for closure. The Kiku XR can also be opened using either the thumb hole or the flipper kick, making it fully ambidextrous for smooth one-handed operation.

Is the pocket clip reversible, and how does the knife carry?

Yes, the pocket clip is reversible and configured for a deep, low-carry tip-up position. This keeps the knife discreet and secure in the pocket. The ambidextrous design means the clip can be positioned to suit either left- or right-handed carry, and a lanyard hole is also included for additional carry options.

What makes the Linen Micarta handle a practical choice for this knife?

Linen Micarta is a durable composite material that provides a secure, textured grip even when your hands are wet. It resists moisture and wear better than many synthetic alternatives. The handle is reinforced with stainless steel liners, adding structural rigidity. At 158.8 g with a 109.22 mm closed length, it's a solid but pocketable everyday carry option.
