The Sauer 404 Classic XT 375H&H Bolt Action Centrefire Rifle is a flagship big-bore hunting platform from one of Germany's most respected rifle makers, purpose-built for hunters pursuing large or dangerous game where stopping power and absolute mechanical reliability are non-negotiable. The 404 platform has earned its reputation through a genuinely modular architecture that allows the shooter to swap barrels and calibres without tools beyond the Sauer Universal Key built right into the front sling swivel stud, making it one of the most adaptable bolt-action systems available to Australian hunters. Chambered in the iconic .375 H&H Magnum, this rifle is legal and appropriate for a wide range of Australian hunting applications including buffalo, feral cattle, and other large introduced species in the Northern Territory and beyond, as well as being a capable choice for hunters pursuing the same cartridge on international game hunts.

Sauer 404 Classic XT 375H&H Bolt Action Centrefire Rifle Key Features

Calibre: Chambered in .375 H&H Magnum, one of the world's most enduring and versatile big-bore cartridges, offering flat enough trajectory for long shots combined with the energy and sectional density required for heavy, large-bodied game.

Barrel Length and Overall Length: The 51 cm (20 in) barrel keeps the rifle manageable in the field, producing an overall length of 101.5 cm. The shorter barrel profile reduces swing weight without meaningfully compromising velocity in this cartridge.

Cylinder Breech with Direct Lug Locking: The closure system uses a cylinder breech with locking directly in the barrel via six bolt head locking lugs, delivering a strong, tight lockup that handles the substantial chamber pressures generated by the .375 H&H cartridge with confidence.

Modular Barrel and Calibre Change System: The 404 platform is designed for barrel and calibre swaps without a gunsmith. The Sauer Universal Key (SUS) is integrated into the front sling swivel stud, meaning the tool for disassembly, barrel changes, and trigger adjustment is always on the rifle.

Packable Form Factor: By removing the buttstock, the rifle reduces to a packable length of just 69 cm (27 in) with the 51 cm barrel fitted, making it considerably easier to transport in aircraft-legal hard cases or pack into remote country.

Manual Cocking System: An ergonomically shaped metal cocking slide on the bolt shroud gives the shooter direct control over the firing pin, allowing the rifle to be carried safely in the field and brought into action with a deliberate, positive motion.

Automatic Firing Pin Safety: The firing pin is automatically blocked unless the bolt is fully closed and locked, providing a critical mechanical safeguard against accidental discharge during chambering or if the bolt is disturbed.

Safe Bolt Opening: The bolt can be cycled and the chamber cleared while the manual safety is engaged, allowing the shooter to unload safely without taking the rifle off safe.

Adjustable Trigger: The direct trigger without pre-travel is factory set at 7.5 N (approximately 750 g, plus or minus 50 g) and can be adjusted across four different pull weights. Trigger pull length adjustment range is 8 mm, allowing a precise fit to the shooter's hand and preference.

Twin Ejectors: Dual ejectors ensure positive, consistent case ejection regardless of orientation, which is particularly useful under pressure when a fast follow-up shot matters.

MagLock Magazine Safety: The MagLock system prevents accidental magazine release, keeping the 2-round magazine securely in place during carry and handling in rough country.

Sauer Universal Mount: The receiver is machined with the Sauer Universal Mount system built in, providing a solid, repeatable optics mounting platform without the need for additional drilling or bases.

Polymer Stock: The Classic XT stock is constructed from polymer, offering durability and weather resistance in field conditions including wet scrub and tropical environments, while keeping overall rifle mass at 3,220 g.

Jeweled Bolt Body: The bolt body features a jeweled finish, a traditional machining treatment that reduces surface contact area and helps resist galling, while giving the action a refined appearance consistent with the Classic XT designation.

Twist Rate: The barrel is cut with a 1 in 305 mm (1 in 12 in) twist rate, suited to stabilising the heavy-for-calibre projectiles typically used in .375 H&H hunting loads.

The Sauer 404 Classic XT in .375 H&H represents a serious investment for the hunter who demands German engineering, genuine modularity, and a platform that performs without hesitation when it matters most.
